A novel e-learning project, the online lab is based on the concept of a virtual learning environment that provides experience in online practical science experiments to the students. OLabs can be offered as a pre-lab learning tool with activities, to support teaching or learning of a concept.
In a move to promote experimentation in learning, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recommended online labs for students of classes 9 and 10 in all schools affiliated to the board. As part of the research initiative to understand the perception on the value, content, learning and usefulness of online labs, surveys were conducted for teachers and students in various schools.
The analysis showed an astounding response in the use of online labs. Teachers and students felt motivated to use the online labs. Majority of the respondents indicated they would like to have OLabs developed for Classes 11 & 12, and have additional subjects like biology, mathematics and languages to be included in the Online Labs.
These factors and the success of Phase 1 of the Online Labs, has propelled the project to the second phase of its development. Phase 2 of the Online Labs project will be developed through the collaborative effort between CDAC Mumbai and Amrita University.
Broadly the phase 2 will look at the following aspects.
Extend OLabs to Classes 9 and 10 (Biology, Maths and English).
Extend OLabs for Classes 11 and 12 (Physics, Chemistry and Biology).
Enhance the framework for multi-lingual support (Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi).
M-Learning enhancements to the framework to support OLabs on mobile devices like Aakash tablet.
